At times the Home Guard (and prior to this, the LDV) had very few weapons. There were times when they would beg, borrow, or steal to obtain weapons. Through both necessity and official encouragement, they made weapons of their own or adapted implements into weapons.
Some weapons listed here which would seem out of place on the battlefield of World War Two were actively promoted for Home Guard use. When patrolling towns and cities at night, members of the Home Guard were instructed to carry, amongst other things, sawn-off shotguns! Not the usual image of a Britsh soldier and not the image that most people would have of the Home Guard.
The Home Guard were encouraged to make or adapt pieces of equipment as well.
